THE GOOD PARENT by Sandi Wade-Janik 11/6/17
I am a parent figure to three men that I love as my very own sons; one is my son from my womb, one from my sister’s womb, and my grandson. I realized that the third received the best of me as I learned and grew in the Lord. I have given much thought as to what makes a good parent. I thank GOD that in the good and bad times His presence was with me. Most parents make mistakes in the rearing of their children. Parents, such as myself, are all too often caught off guard by the things children, teens and young adults do, and without consulting GOD, we parents allow our worldly wisdom to rise to the occasion in response to their actions or ‘strange’ requests. Sometimes parents may get by with this, but in the end the child will not be adhering to what GOD says, but to what the parent says or does in his/her fleshly response. Later in the life of the child we will see the result of this.
*Let us look at ‘some’ of the instruction GOD gives to the parent.
- Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
- Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
- Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
- Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
- Deuteronomy 6:5-7 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
- Matthew 18:14 Jesus tells us, “So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”
Many of us have raised children in church, according to the Word, and while some children remained close to the Lord as they grew, another perhaps strayed. Parents should plant the Good seed, pray and trust GOD. See Luke15:11-32
Today, as with every generation, we see too many children that have grown up and yielded to evil thoughts and actions. Satan grabbed hold of them and used them to his advantage to come against GOD’s children. They steal, kill, and destroy lives because they have fallen prey to his lies. How did this happen? Parents not teaching their children in the ways of the one true Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Parents not relentlessly snatching them from the fire?
We should avoid saying. “Do what I say…not what I do.” Parents should set a Godly example because ‘monkey see, monkey do!’ Young Children most often repeat or do in action what they hear or see at home or from others close at hand.
Most parents realize they must stand guard over their children in prayer because young curious minds can be snatched by the evil one in a moment! Do we realize that GOD did not call us to be our children’s buddy. He called us to be loving parents, using Godly discipline, and behaving as a Godly Christ-like example, teaching them in the ways they should go according to GOD. As parents some of us do well, some of us stumble, and some of us fail to the detriment of our children. GOD forgives…seek His forgiveness.
Today, thank GOD for your children! Pray for your children and when you present His Ways to them and they do not listen, give these concerns to GOD, for what is impossible for us is possible with GOD, and remain walking in a Christ Like manner. We must be bold in Christ! We must set the example and live according to His instruction. Never think it is too late to change your way of thinking to GOD’s Way of thinking. Repentance is available for everyone. Seeking forgiveness, changing your thoughts to GOD’s thoughts, and behaving in a Christ like manner will be seen by your child, even when they are grown, and create in them a heart that desires to love and follow Jesus. Our children can see we are not perfect…do not pretend you are. Allow them to see GOD’s grace and mercy in your life.
Sometimes our children become wayward and enjoy the sin that Satan offers and the flesh presents itself to enjoy. We are told in Ephesians 5:11 ‘Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.’ We are not told to scream, point fingers in disgust, but to expose the sin with self control. Many are not good at this, and I will tell you that I still must work at this. But in my weakness GOD is strong and we all should love our children enough to do this for them. For if they do not immediately adhere to GOD’s wisdom, we as parents must give our concerns to GOD, trust Him and wait upon Him, remembering that GOD’s timing is not as ours.
I would like to share a prayer by the Apostle Paul and a word of GOD to Isaiah that we parents can pray and claim for our children or those in need. A prayer that should be prayed daily. Taken from Ephesians 1:16-19a, Isaiah 54:17:
****For you, (say name), I ask that the God of our LORD Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, give to you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. I declare GOD’s Word for you: “No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from Me, declares the Lord.” May our LORD command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways and may you be surrounded by GOD’s hedge of protection throughout your days on earth. Jesus, in Your Holy Name, I ask. Amen.
With much love through Christ our Risen Lord and Savior,
